Port Al-Thani to go ahead

Moayad Shatat, representative of the Katari group, and the mayor of Marbella come together to “clarify matters related to the project of expansion of the port.

Group Al-Thani, a company belonging to Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser Al Thani and contracted to extend the port of Marbella Bajadilla, visited the new management team of the port and reiterated the interest of his group to submit the project, taking all the necessary steps to make the enlargement a reality as soon as possible.

It was high time, because the Katari group had kept silent long months without fulfilling the obligations required in the contract sealed with the Ports Agency of Andalusia (APPA) and the municipality of Marbella, thereby creating a climate of frustration, uncertainty and polemic at all social, economic and political levels. In May, finally, the regional administration decided to rescue the license to extend the port of La Bajadilla.

That’s when Al-Thani started to showed signs of life again. He filed a complaint, which included the compromise to create a managing company for the port area, “Nas Marbella SA”, and expressed the intention to comply with other requirements such as the extension of their social capital that has now reached twenty-one million Euros.

The APPA has given in and suspended the withdrawl of the concession. A new deadline was established to accredit the commercial registration of the company “Nas Marbella SA” until mid August, as well as a demand of payment regarding the income fee for 2012 and 2013, amounting to 1.5 million Euros. The concessionaire is also asked to present documents to proof that he is up to date with all other payments. The suspension of the withdrawl is conditioned on the presentation of a written compromise of execution” regarding the enlargement of the port within a maximum period of four months from August 15. Therefore, the construction project must be submitted on December 15th  this year and must be accompanied by the contract documents.

The mayor has been very satisfied that the project “will become a reality” and highlighted the will of the concessionaire to continue. The council, in turn, will continue to pursue the proposal whenever there is “viability” in it, and stressed it as an “essential infrastructure” for the future of the city, which will provide cruise, extend the possibility of new berths and “create jobs and economic activity.”
